Why I Wrote a Book About Wedding DJ Stories

The Last Song Is Never The Whole Story

"All these wedding DJ stories were in my head, I had to get them down on paper!"

Most people think a wedding DJ just shows up, plays music, makes a few announcements, and keeps the dance floor moving.

If only it were that simple.

After more than 150 weddings and 300 events, I have learned that the music is only part of the story. A big part, of course, but not the whole story.

The real work often happens before the first song is played, before the first announcement is made, and sometimes before the couple or guests even realize there is a problem.

That is why I wrote my first book, The Last Song Is Never the Whole Story: True Stories from Behind the Wedding DJ Booth.

I wanted to share the wedding DJ stories that most people never hear.

Not the polished Instagram version of weddings. Not the perfect final photo. Not just the packed dance floor at the end of the night.

I wanted to tell the stories behind the scenes.

The power issues. The timeline challenges. The equipment problems. The emotional moments. The funny surprises. The unpredictable guests. The difficult rooms. The last-minute decisions. The quiet problem-solving that happens so the couple can keep enjoying their wedding day without being pulled into every little issue.

Because the truth is, a smooth wedding does not happen by accident.

It happens because people are prepared.

It happens because vendors communicate.

It happens because someone is watching the flow of the night, paying attention to the room, making announcements clearly, adjusting when things change, and helping the celebration move from one moment to the next without feeling awkward, rushed, or disorganized.

That is a huge part of what a professional wedding DJ and MC actually does.

Jennifer and I have seen a lot over the years through Starlight DJ Services. We are a husband-and-wife wedding team based in the London and Dorchester, Ontario area. I handle the DJ and MC side, and Jennifer is a registered Ontario wedding officiant. Together, we have been part of weddings in ballrooms, barns, golf clubs, restaurants, backyards, conservation areas, and venues all across Southwestern Ontario.

Every wedding is different.

Every couple is different.

Every crowd is different.

And every once in a while, something happens that reminds you very quickly that weddings are live events. There are no retakes.

That is part of what makes them beautiful. It is also what makes experience matter.

A playlist cannot solve a power problem.

A speaker cannot calm a nervous couple.

A microphone cannot fix a broken timeline.

And a song list cannot read the room, coordinate with the venue, adjust the energy, or make sure Grandma hears the speeches.

Those things come from experience, preparation, and caring enough to pay attention.

That is really what the book is about.

Yes, it is full of true wedding DJ stories. Some are funny. Some are stressful. Some are emotional. Some still make me shake my head. But underneath all of them is the same message:

The couple and guests may remember the final song, but the final song is never the whole story.

There is always more happening behind the scenes.

I also wrote this book for engaged couples who are planning their wedding and trying to figure out what really matters.

When you are planning a wedding, it is easy to get overwhelmed by prices, packages, photos, menus, flowers, timelines, and opinions from everyone around you. It can feel like every vendor is saying they are the best.

But the question is not always, “Who is the cheapest?” or even, “Who has the fanciest setup?”

A better question is:

Who do you trust when the day does not go exactly as planned?

Because at some point, almost every wedding needs someone to quietly adjust, solve, guide, or calm something down.

That is the part guests rarely see.

And that is the part couples often do not think about until after the wedding is over.

I did not write The Last Song Is Never the Whole Story as a sales pitch. I wrote it because these stories mattered to me. I wrote it because Jennifer and I have had a front-row seat to some incredible, funny, stressful, touching, and unforgettable wedding moments. And I wrote it because I think couples deserve to understand what really goes into making a wedding feel smooth, organized, and memorable.

For me personally, writing a book was also something I never expected to do.

I am an engineer by training. I spent years in technical sales, teaching, business, and eventually DJing weddings and events. I never grew up thinking I would become an author.

But sometimes you collect enough stories that they start asking to be written down.

This book is my attempt to do that.

It is part memoir, part wedding industry field guide, and part love letter to music, marriage, teamwork, and the privilege of being trusted with one of the biggest days in people’s lives.

If you are planning a wedding, I hope the book helps you think differently about what happens behind the scenes.

If you are already married, I hope it makes you smile and maybe remember a few moments from your own wedding day.

If you work in the wedding industry, I suspect you will recognize a lot of the chaos, humour, and quiet problem-solving that comes with live events.

And if you simply enjoy true behind-the-scenes stories, I think you will find something in it too.

Because weddings are never just about one song, one speech, one dance, or one moment.

They are about everything that has to come together to make those moments feel effortless.

That is why I wrote a book about wedding DJ stories.

Because the last song is never the whole story.
